India says it has handed to Islamabad evidence that links the deadly Mumbai attacks to “elements” in Pakistan.

Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee called on Pakistan to act on the evidence and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The evidence is said to include the interrogation of the surviving gunman, details of phone conversations between the attackers and weapons information.

More than 170 people died when 10 gunmen attacked Mumbai in November.

Artie lange rehab

India blames Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) for the attacks. LeT and the Pakistani government have denied any involvement.

Pakistan’s government says it has received the Indian dossier and is reviewing its contents.

It had previously repeatedly said it was willing to co-operate in the investigation but that India had not shared its evidence.

Meanwhile, US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher is in Pakistan for talks aimed at reducing tensions between the two neighbours.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani repeated a promise that Pakistan would punish any of its citizens if “credible” evidence were found of their involvement in the Mumbai attacks.

‘Unpardonable crime’

Mr Mukherjee said: “We have today handed over to Pakistan evidence of the links with elements in Pakistan of the terrorists who attacked Mumbai (Bombay) on 26 November, 2008.

“What happened in Mumbai was an unpardonable crime,” he said.

Mr Mukherjee said the evidence would also be shared with the international community.

Last month global police agency Interpol said it had not been given any information.

Mr Mukherjee added: “As far as the government of Pakistan is concerned, we ask only that it implement the bilateral commitments that it has made at the highest levels to India, and practises her international obligations. These are clear.”

Mr Mukherjee said the evidence was handed over to the Pakistani high commissioner in Delhi by Indian Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon.

Later on Monday Mr Menon said: “You see it is quite clear that what we would like from the Pakistani authorities is all the information related to this crime. We want to know how this conspiracy was formed, how it was carried out, how the training, the planning, the organisation and the actual handling, how that was done.”

According to a press release issued by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the evidence handed to Pakistan includes “material from the interrogation of Mohammed Ajmal Amir Qasab” - the sole surviving gunman from the attacks, who is in Indian custody.

“Details of the terrorists’ communication links with elements in Pakistan during the attack, recovered weapons and equipment, and data retrieved from recovered GPS and satellite phones” have also been handed over to Pakistan, the release says.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told Reuters news agency: “It is our duty, my duty to examine the dossier carefully, understand it and be truthful to myself, to my country.”

On Monday he described Indian accusations that Pakistani “state actors” were involved in the attacks as “speculation”.

Severe strain

Last month, Mr Mukherjee described militant groups in Pakistan as “the greatest danger to peace and security in the entire world”.

He accused Islamabad of “denial” and “shifting the blame” for the Mum

Settling Burris: Quiet strategy or high drama?

from nbc’s ken stricklandsenate democrats are gaming out scenarios to lecture the roland burris debate with the least amount of drama or “school house doors” variety of theatrics. according to a superior democratic assistant and other sources knowledgeable about the complex senate rules, the linchpin to their efforts centers on burris not having the favourably credentials to be seated as a us senator — in other words, fragmented paperwork.

Under Senate rules, the “recommended forms of certificate” for a new senator should include the signature of a state’s governor AND Secretary of State. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White has said publicly he will not sign Burris’ certificate.

The Secretary of the Senate, a Democratic appointee elected by the body, must make the determination if Burris’ “certificate of appointment” meets those requirements. (The “Secretary” oversees the Senate’s day-to-day legislative, financial, and administrative operations. Republicans fill the position when they hold the majority.)…(read more)

course driver trainers, died last sunday after a short bout with esophageal cancer.

Charlie was a race driver himself - Class Champion in the 1989 Firestone Firehawk Showroom Stock series in a factory-supported Nissan Stanza - and also a skiing, hiking and golfing enthusiast.

Stanley kamel suicide

Goodman was born on Sept. 4, 1940, on a farm near Weyburn Saskatchewan, and was initially in the insurance business.

He sold that to pursue his love of automobiles and, especially, motorsport.

He discovered he also had a talent for teaching, and dedicated himself to training drivers, both for on-track and on-road work.

“Chas” as he was known was one of the most up-beat people I have ever met - never without a smile on his face.

For those of you old enough to remember Howie Meeker, the original hockey broadcast colour commentator, that was Charlie - short of stature, high-pitched voice, very strongly-held opinions, but delivered in a cheerful refreshing manner that made you a believer.

That skill also helped convince such major corporations as General Motors, Nissan, Sunoco and Bridgestone to sponsor his various driving schools.

My favourite Charlie Goodman story revolves round his move to Mosport.

Mosport had been purchased by American pharmaceutical and car racing magnate Don Panoz, who wanted to establish a proper racing school there.

Chas was happy running the Bridgestone Racing Academy at Shannonville Motorsport Park near Belleville Ontario, with his wife June, son Brett and daughter Kim. He also loved living “in the county” - Prince Edward County.

But he felt as the local purveyor of race driver training, he should have a shot at the Mosport project, in addition to the Usual Suspects - Skip Barber, Jim Russell, et al.

As always, Chas felt no compunction in telling the Panoz organization exactly what he thought - that Mosport was such a challenging circuit for experienced pro racers, let alone beginners, that the prudent option would be to construct a purpose-built training facility.

The Panoz people bought the concept, and the new facility was constructed outside Turn Eight.

Chas retired with his golfing fanatic wife June in the fall of 1999, as Brett and Kim moved the Academy to its new home.

Chas is survived by June, Brett, and Kim.

He will be sorely missed.

***

Visitation and a service will be at the Newcastle Funeral Home on Mill Street South in Newcastle, on the north-west corner of Robert Street, at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009. Take the Mill Street exit from the 401.

George W. Bush:

Think Progress: BUSH; Well, I have obviously made a decision to make sure the economy doesn’t collapse. I’ve abandoned free market principles to save the free market system. I think when people review what’s taken place in the last six months, uh, and put it all in one, in one, (sigh), you know, in one package, they’re realize how significantly we have moved…

Or realize how wrong Bush and his sycophants were in the first place.

Mike shanahan

If adhering to free market principles leads to an economic collapse, perhaps free market principles aren’t a good idea? The old-style Keynesians had a name for something that was a good idea: the mixed economy.

Stupidest man alive.

Editor’s note: this is my last post for 2008. I will be back after the start of the new year.

Last time, I shared with you a series of photographs of Furry fans taken by Brian Berman and encouraged us to reflect a bit on what they show or fail to show us about this particular subcultural community. To me, these photographs speak to a core issue in fan studies: the question of how we position ourselves vis-a-vis the subjects of our research. Put in its broadest terms, we see different things and say different things if we are writing about a community which we are a member of than when we are dealing with that same community as an outsider.

Bidai

Brian is very explicit in his artistic statement and in his bio that while he is fascinated by these fan communities, he looks at them as an outsider, a non-participant. This does not mean that his photographs are necessarily hostile to the communities being depicted, but they do, to some degree, hold these fans at a distance. This is the strength of the images in many ways, but it is also what may make them more than a little disturbing to some of us who claim a much closer set of social and emotional ties to fan communities.

By way of contrast, I thought we might look at some of the videos we’ve been producing about Cosplay for Project New Media Literacies’s learning library project. These videos, filmed at an anime convention in Ohio, reflect a perspective much more sympathetic to the fan experience. Indeed, many of the students who worked with us on these videos were themselves anime fans and some of them had a long history of cosplay. Our goal was precisely to escape the outsider perspective of many commercial documentaries about fans, to treat cosplay as a normal and valued mode of cultural expression, and to hopefully introduce these practices to young people who may not have found their way into the cosplay community before.

These photographs were taken by Brian Berman at Onnafest, Newark Gateway Hilton, Newark, NJ 2005.

Brian Berman was born in New York City in 1971 and grew up in the suburbs of New Jersey. After graduating from both the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and the School of Visual Arts in NYC he started shooting professionally in New York in 1996. He shoots for, and has been featured in, publications such as the New York Times, Esquire, Ojo de Pez, and Capricious Magazine. He has also been featured in shows at the Houston Photo Festival and Wallspace Gallery. The project featured here is part of larger project about how people fulfill a basic human need to fit in by creating their own subcultures. He does not watch anime or own a fursuit.

Thanks for stopping by Hero Complex during the holiday week, apologies again for the sparse posting pace, we’ll be back at full speed before the first of the year…

Last week I put up some great Marvel holiday comics art through the years and Jim McCann over at Marvel sent me a nice note and even more images. So, happy holidays and enjoy these ghosts of Christmas past …

Here’s a classic yuletide image from my childhood. I loved the oversized Marvel and DC books of the 1970s. This 1974 collection of reprints included “Have Yourself a Sandman Little Christmas!” from “Marvel Team-Up” No. 1 and a classic battle between Hulk and the Thing that had pretty much had nothing to do with the holidays.

King review

The Marvel Holiday Special became a tradition during the 1991 holiday season when this issue below kicked off the annual series. Art Adams did the cover and he also drew the Fantastic Four story inside:

And here’s the full wraparound cover version…run, Santa, run!

Geez, what did St. Nick do to deserve that kind of scare?

Two tidbits about the 1992 holiday special below (which has a January 1993 cover date): It had a Hanukkah story that revealed for the first time that Doc Samson was the world’s most powerful green-haired Jew and its cover featured Speedball the Masked Marvel, a Steve Ditko creation that just went nowhere but not for lack of exposure. He’s the guy down in the left corner who looks like he’s living inside the bubbles of a lava lamp:

The 1993 Marvel Holiday Special (with January 1994 date on it) has an offbeat cover by Michael Kaluta. Kaluta’s art fascinated me when I was a young kid in the 1970s and came across his work on the DC revival of “The Shadow.” Random fact: Kaluta shared a New York studio in late 1970s with Berni Wrightson, Barry Windsor Smith and Jeffrey Jones, which is a staggering amount of talent sharing one electrical bill.

That 1993 Holiday Special was also available with a second cover by the great George Perez…

The cover below, from the 1996 holiday season (again, with a January 1997
